Adoption Process

Most animals who end up at a rescue have had a rough start to their lives. Either they have been passed from person to person, been abused, neglected, abandoned, or discarded. While that is not true for all, it is an all to common story. Because of that, when we take in an animal we hope that it will be the last time that animal will have to change hands, and that their new home will treat them with love for the rest of their lives. That is why we have such a rigorous adoption process, to help match the animals with the best possible families. We do not operate on a first  come first serve basis. We methodically go through each application, do reference checks, call your veterinarian, and do a home inspection. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and we appreciate your patience.

Please review the following steps in the adoption process so you know what to expect:

Step 1: Fill out an adoption application.

If you are hoping to adopt an animal that we currently have or just want to get preapproved so you're ready when the right animal comes along this is the way to get the ball rolling.

Step 2: We review your application.

We call your references, check in with your veterinarian, and chat with you to get to know you better and find out which of our animals will best fit in with your home and lifestyle.

Step 3: Set up a home inspection.

Don't worry we are not coming to judge if you dust daily or are ready to entertain at a moments notice, we just want to make sure that the animal you are adopting is going to be provided a safe, warm, home appropriate for the species you are adopting and that you have adequate space for him or her.

Step 4: Set up a meet-and-greet.

When there is an animal you feel will be a good match for your family we will set up a time for a volunteer to meet you with that animal so you can see if you "click." If you have other animals already it's a good idea to let them meet their potential new sibling and see how they all get along.

Step 5: Final details.

Once you are approved and have met your furry (or scaley or feathered) match-made-in-heaven all that is left is to pay the adoption fee and set up a time to pick up or have your new family member dropped off.

Step 6: Afterwards.

We always love to stay in touch and hear how great everything is going! We love facebook reviews and pictures and stories for our website. However, if you bring home the animal and in a few days or even years later it doesn't work out we will always take back the animal no questions asked.

Requirements to adopt from us:

  • You must be 18 years old or older or have a parent or guardian who can sign for the animal

  • You must live in a home that allows for the species you wish to adopt, or for horses have a place picked out to board them

  • All of your animals must be current on their vaccines (unless there is a medical reason why they cannot be vaccinated, and that must be verified by a vet)
